Information for professional referrers
Advocacy Plus is an independent charity providing advocacy for older people (60 and over) living in Westminster
The service is free, independent of Westminster Council, the PCT and other service providers.
We specialise in advocacy for older people with dementia and those with mental health problems.
Advocacy is taking action to help people
- Say what they want
- Secure their rights
- Represent their interests
- Obtain the services they need
Advocates work in partnership with the people they support and take their side.
Issues
- Our service is issue-based, and the work is limited to 1 issue or a small number of issues.
- The advocate works on the issue in collaboration with the client, until it is resolved or until we cannot take it any further.
- The issue is usually a question of the person's eligibility for a service or entitlement, satisfaction with the service, or recognition by a service provider of their individual circumstances.
- Typical issues include housing matters, problems with neighbours, social care services, health services and formal complaints with any of these.
- Advocates can help with communication between the client and a service provider, but only on the issue that is agreed with the client and taking the client's point of view.
